It's interesting to note the varying degrees to which newspapers have reacted to the advent of Internet news. The original Little Hen response was to declare that the world of newspapers was falling to pieces. Why would people want a stodgy old newspaper when they could have instant access to news on their computers? Some newspapers embraced the technology, leading the forefront of convergence (the marriage of newspaper writing with new media techniques). Others drug their feet, hemming and hawing about the need to preserve the newspaper. Do I have the answer? Hardly. I'm simply a recent journalism school graduate who has been give the task of helping strengthen the web presence of the Daily Globe. However, the answer seems to lie in a happy medium. The newspaper itself provides a source of information, despite a power outage or loss of Internet. The Internet allows us to give the readers information quicker, with in-depth reporting in print the following day. So, it had to happen. Welcome to the Dodge City Daily Globe's first foray in the blogosphere. Here you won't find half-baked (or even well thought out) political rants. That's not my job. Consider it your fly's-eye view behind the scenes of a paper. Updated irregularly at first, I can almost guarantee it. Some ideas are being kicked around the office, so be sure to check back regularly. Anyway, welcome. We've got a long climb ahead of us. - Mark V. |
